Lost in the Music [“Sun & Moon” by Above & Beyond]

Have you ever experienced a song that captures your attention and takes you over? A song that pulls you into itself, not letting go until it’s finished? If you have, then you know that music can almost control you – your mind, your vision, your outlook on life. It is all-consuming, and yet the more you listen to it over time the more it becomes a familiar force of a firm embrace rather than a relentless tug.

“Sun & Moon” will make the world disappear. One of my favorite songs by trance trio Above & Beyond (with Richard Bedford), it features a steady buildup and ethereal lyrics that consume the listener and causes the rest of the world to fade away. Soon the listener is hit, almost suddenly, by a burst of color and emotion as the central synth chords come into play. Your have been captured. A steady build as Bedford’s voice returns, and the song swirling around you and is all that you can comprehend. You are lost in the music.

I was first captured by “Sun & Moon” more than a decade ago. Throughout my teenage years, it was one of only a handful of songs that I would play on repeat. It went from being a mere standout on a playlist to a familiar friend, carrying me through life changes, moves away from family, loss of friends, and even into my years as a young adult. Even now it remains as one of my favorite songs. I sing it to myself frequently, and I hope that it will become as much a familiar force to you as it does to me.

Note: The attached music video is for the radio edit of “Sun & Moon”. I prefer the Original mix. The latter is a couple minutes longer, but in my opinion it’s well worth it.
